Strongly influenced by faith, Gospel singing was also a significant part of the migrant experience in establishing community and cultural identity. Having its origins in slavery, incorporating positive messages from Christianity and, subsequently, social messages it became a vehicle for overcoming oppression and prejudice. Apart from the traditional calypso, reggae was enjoyed too.

The Caribbean’s have had a massive impact on wider British culture, in many areas including music, which inspired young white people and many other cultures.
